Frequently
Asked
Questions

How do I know if I'm eligible to enrol?

To be eligible for our Youth Guarantee programmes, you must be a domestic learner between the ages of 16 and 24 and not currently enrolled in any other course. Learners aged 15 may also be eligible, provided they have received an exemption from secondary school. The same applies for our Y Goals and ACE programmes but we do accept learners above the age of 24 for these programmes.

How do you support students with different learning needs or disabilities?

We keep class sizes small and work with you to create a learning plan that meets your needs. Y Education has also been awarded the Dyslexia Quality Mark. You can learn more here.

How do you ensure student safety and wellbeing?

We ensure all our education sites meet the Wellbeing and Safety Code of Practice established by the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC).  You can learn more about this here. The wellbeing and safety of our learners are central to everything we do. At Y Education, educators also meet with learners face-to-face every five weeks to check in on their progress and wellbeing.

How can I enrol?

Start your journey by enquiring with us today. You can make an enquiry on our website here, and we will be in touch shortly or get in touch directly with staff at one of our sites here.

How do you keep parents and/or caregivers in the loop?

We respect each learner’s right to privacy while maintaining clear communication with parents and caregivers when appropriate. We also host open days and whānau events to encourage family involvement and strengthen community connections.

What does my timetable look like?

Your timetable will depend on the specific programme you’re enrolled in, as schedules vary between programmes. Please refer to each programme page here for more information.

What makes the Y different than a normal school environment?

Our learners tell us that Y Education is different to a school environment in many ways! If you haven’t already, check out our learner stories to hear from them.

They tell us that:

- We have smaller classes, providing you with more one on one time with your tutor.

- We teach in a way that recognises and appreciates the way you learn – its not a one size fits all approach.

- We treat you like an adult, providing you the opportunity to self-manage.

- We are inclusive to all, recognising that you each bring your own life experiences, ideas and creativity in whatever form that looks like.

- We provide a lot of one-on-one support and encouragement to help you achieve your learning and life goals.

How do you handle bullying?

Y Education is committed to providing our students and staff with a safe and inclusive learning environment. All learners are required to conduct themselves in line with our Code of Conduct which outlines the expected behaviours for students and specifically mentions that bullying is not acceptable. Our Code of Conduct is not just a poster on the wall that doesn’t get followed. We use it daily to promote positive behaviour and manage poor behaviour.

How do credits work towards NCEA?

Our Youth Guarantee programmes are based on unit standards, each with credits that count towards NCEA Level 1 and 2. We also include the compulsory literacy and numeracy 20 credits in our Level 1 Foundation Skills and Level 2 Automotive programmes. Depending on how many credits you have achieved towards NCEA before you start with us, you should be able to complete NCEA Level 1 and 2 as you complete our programmes.
