What does the programme cover?

This program offers learners the skills to pathway into the building industry, helping them develop a versatile approach to learning through project-based activities. Throughout the program, learners will gain the ability to connect theoretical knowledge with practical skills.

Graduates will be able to:

  • Follow safe working practices and maintain personal safety while completing BCATS projects.
  • Identify, select, use, and care for hand tools, power tools, and materials required for BCATS work.
  • Read and follow project plans and documentation, including identifying materials and task order.
  • Perform basic measurements and calculations needed to complete construction tasks.
  • Follow instructions, communicate effectively, and collaborate with others in a workshop or team environment.

On completion of the programmes, learners will be awarded the New Zealand Certificate in Building, Construction and Allied Trades (BCATs) Level 1 and 2.

Who can Enrol

This is a youth qualification designed for all learners aged 16 – 24 (15 with an exemption) who do not already hold a qualification at level 2 or above.

When can I Enrol?

This programme runs for 30 weeks, which includes a two week holiday break. You can enrol at any time throughout the year.

Timetable

Course runs Monday - Friday 8.00am -3.00pm.
With Fridays reserved for work experience.

Next steps

Pathway into:

  • an entry level role in the construction or allied trade industry
  • an apprenticeship at Level 4 with a host workplace/carpenter
  • Further study towards BCATs Level 3
